Copper shot or slag is a by-product obtained from mining tailings and is used at the Magallanes Shipyard as an abrasive material to remove paint from the hulls of ships. Through a collaborative project between ASMAR (M) and the Department of Construction Engineering of the University of Magallanes, tests have been generated for the reuse of this waste as a 75% replacement of aggregate for paving concrete, as indicated by the PhD in Engineering and Civil Projects from Umag, Yasna Segura.

Meanwhile, the head of the Casco Workshop of the Magallanes Shipyard, Alejandro Zapata, comments that this process is triggered as the shot is refined and he does not have the necessary volume to be able to remove the paint from the ships, adding that annually they are about 50 tons that can be reused, which was previously generated on a small scale to replace aggregates in paving and the permeable layer of southern roads.
